Christian author detained amid renewed crackdown on Early Rain Covenant Church

On 14 August, a group of more than 50 Christians were meeting at a teahouse in the Wuhou district of Chengdu in Southwestern province of Sichuan for Sunday worship, when around 30 uniformed and plain clothes police officers raided the place. Announcing that the gathering was “illegal”, the officials locked the door and ordered everyone to produce their ID details. Xing Hongwei, known by his pen name ‘A Xin’, was taken to a local police station by force after he refused to give his details.

New research on China’s urban house churches amid the COVID-19 pandemic

CSW is pleased to highlight an exclusive piece of research into the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on unregistered Protestant ‘house’ churches in China. The research, undertaken by an experienced researcher in May and June 2020, looks at three key cases: a police raid on Xingguang Church in Xiamen; an Easter crackdown on members of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu; and a church-led effort to support hospitals and communities in Wuhan affected by the virus – an effort which was thwarted by the authorities.

Authorities raid Xingguang church for second time in just over a month

Xiamen city authorities destroyed property and parts of a building belonging to Xingguang Church on 11 June in the second raid on the church in just over a month, according to an open statement by a Chinese pastor on social media. Authorities had previously shut down a Sunday service at the church on 3 May, injuring several church members and damaging property during the process.
